AWP 2017 Evening Events: A Short List


Good morning.

Are you coming to DC for AWP 2017? Are you wondering what to do with your evenings?  Here are a few ideas.

Will we make it to all of these events? Not likely. Do we wish we could? Absolutely.

But listen, regardless of whatever else you choose to do, you should get your AWP sea legs at the Atticus Review/District Lit Happy Hour at Iron Horse Tap Room from 5:30 – 7:30.  There will be no readings. However, because we know what is important, there will be free drink tickets handed out to the first 30 attendees, so show up early! There will also be friendly people to talk to. 

Ok, so here’s what we’ve got our eye on for evening off-sites:

Thursday, February 9th:

5:30 – 7:30 pm: Atticus Review/District Lit Happy Hour:
Location: Iron Horse Tap Room

Come hang out with editors from Atticus Review and District Lit. There will be swag. There will be conversations.


7:30 – 8:30 pm: SHORT, FRESH, & Weird: Five Debut Authors Read
Location: Bakers & Baristas

Our very own Fiction Editor Michelle Ross will be reading from her debut collection at this event, along with several other great writers.


7:30 pm – 9:30 pm: The Inner Loop: AWP Edition
Location: The Pub & The People

A special AWP edition of The Inner Loop, “Off the Page and On the Mic”, celebrating small presses and lit mags.


7-11 pm: AWP17 Offsite Reading: Electric Lip Launch
Location: Johnny Pistolas

Two great presses. One mega event.


Friday February 10th:

6-8pm: CNF Reading: Under the Gum Tree, Fourth Genre, River Teeth
Location: Shaw’s Tavern

There will be some great nonfiction read here. No lie. No alternate facts.


6-7:30 pm: Lines + Stars Reading
Location: Bossa Bistro + Lounge

A DC Press. A great reading.


7-8:30 pm Big Lucks and Barrelhouse Present: Still Here
Location: Third Floor

BL + BH. What more is there to say?


7-10pm: Split Lip Mag + Sundog Lit Present Fightin’ Words
Location: Solly’s U St Tavern

Readings from contributors to Split Lip Magazine and Sundog Lit.


8- 11pm: Lit Up / Dorothy
Location: The Black Squirrel

Dorothy / Action Books / Dzanc / Two Dollar Radio / CCM / #Recurrent


Saturday, February 11th:

6:15-7:30 pm:  Candlelight Vigil for Free Speech
Location: Lafayette Park, across from the White House

Light a candle in front of the White House.


7- 9 pm: The AWP Small Press Party
Location: Petworth Citizen

Join Curbside Splendor Publishing, Deep Vellum Publishing, Featherproof Books, Sarabande Books, and Two Dollar Radio for a cocktail party delightfully devoid of readings.


7-9 pm: Cold, Dark Flash: An evening of noir flash fiction
Location: The Pub & The People

Join SmokeLong Quarterly and D.C.’s Noir at the Bar for an off-site AWP reading “Cold, Dark Flash,” an evening of noir flash fiction.
