For Paul Valéry

Coffee within my coffee

a commute within my commute

a hello within my hello

released only sincerely when the hollow

within my morning opens up to reveal

the morning within my morning a

comb within my comb and a shoe within

the crevasse of my shoe. Could I peer

within my own eyes in that mirror to see

my other eyes within and still drive?

My car within a car releases the summer

within summer, which was waiting there all along.

About Vertigo Diary: “ … Larry’s poetry gives me the best kind of vertigo: the kind where you’re afraid of falling, but when you do you fall into a soft, meaty, sensual, smart ravine that shakes you pretty good, but instead of killing you it turns you into a Thinking Cocktail. What a scary and fine artist Mr. Sawyer is!” —Andrei Codrescu
