FOX by J.R. Solonche

I was on the phone
looking out the window.
Out of both corners
of my eye, I saw a big
red fox, the biggest
fox I’ve ever seen,
race across my lawn.
Its paws barely touched
the ground. Its tail
streamed behind,
a rocket’s red exhaust.
I looked to see if it was
being chased. It wasn’t.
I looked to see if it was
chasing something.
It wasn’t. I don’t know
why it was racing
across my lawn like
that, like a devil out
of hell. I don’t know
why a devil would race
out of hell. I don’t
remember who was
on the phone.
