They’ve Blocked the Yellow Brick Road

If the munchkins had detained Dorothy
a scarecrow would still be hanging in the field
while a tinman rusted in the woods
and a lion cried itself to sleep over counting sheep,
lives wasting for want of a connection
with someone born on the wrong side of the border.
If the munchkins had detained Dorothy
and taken Toto from her, there would still be
a witch in the west bent on making herself great again
while the wizard’s smoke and mirrors flashed
fighting terror with terror and asking his people
to do as they were told or face his fury;
do you think either would have let Dorothy into Oz
if they had known the storm she was bringing?
